08.12.2012 Stralsund

Today I took a day trip to Stralsund with a friend. I've been wishing for the sea for a while now and I heard that it's beautiful up there. So I found a super cheap carpool in German, online, and booked it. A few days later my friend wanted to bring her friend as well, so she booked a ride too, and was somehow (suspiciously) able to book the same carpool as ours, with the same guy, and the same details. The both of us couldn't read German so we figured we'll find out when we get there. In the end, we discovered that our carpool was actually a train, and it was cheap because on our way back, it stopped at practically every stop between Berlin and Stralsund! I think it took us about 2-3 hours to return home.

Where's the beach?! Stralsund turned out to be more of a port than a seaside resort. The city is a Unesco Hertitage Site, but everything's been renovated in a touristy manner, and felt fake. Maybe it was the materials and people in costume. So we walked around and then got onto a ferry to the next island, Rugen, since looking up "things to do in Stralsund" left us dissatisfied. Rugen had chalk cliffs and white sand, and was apparently a vacation spot for Freud and Einstein...and when we got there we asked about the beaches and the lady drew us a line on a map from where we stood to the opposite end of the island... Germany's largest island that is. Oh well, I did see a jellyfish though.

Homes of the seven dwarves! (just kidding)

Toys for children

Old Market Square

Town Hall

A real jellyfish!

We laid on the perimeter of the island. Found a patch of sand, a little sun, and made ourselves a temporary home. It's pretty.. vegetationy.. isn't it.
