Karim Rashid was actually an Industrial Design alumni from Carleton. He was classmates with the director of our program and came to visit our school. He gave a lecture on design and where it was heading, followed by a reception with the students. A few of us went out and had dinner with him as well. He's actually surprisingly approachable and easy to talk to. I was glad to hear afterwards that he really enjoyed his visit (probably just as much as we enjoyed him coming.) And I think the whirlwind of Karim Rashid-ness our school was going through for the week left many of the students in a slight Karim Rashid daze!

The ID student association prepped and planned Karim's visit. We wanted to keep it simple yet homey at the same time... Homey in a non-kitch way that is.
"Design for the future," he says
Karim's lecture was really good. I think a lot of the students were also impressed as well. Many were expecting something about his new book or a life story with all the products he's done, but instead, it was about real design, where he felt it was going, and what his values were when it comes to designing. It really gave insight to us knowing him not only a designer name/brand, but a real person.

huzzah!
The reception followed the lecture. The room was super pink because we covered all the lights with pink cellophane. Karim mingled with the students for a while and then went out to dinner afterwards. I don't have pictures of the dinner, but that was nice too. There were only a few faculty and students at the dinner, but it was cosy. It was one of those dinners where afterwards you feel like you've just made a new friend.
I was an intern at Umbra over the summer so I had an Oh Chair that I upholstered in faux fur. It was for this promo thing they were doing, but I never finished the chair in time. Anyway I took the chair with me to Ottawa to finish, and coincidentally Karim Rashid was coming to visit Carleton, so I brought it in to add to the reception decor. I was thinking of getting it signed as well, but there was nowhere to sign it since it was covered in fur. Oh well, I think he enjoyed it nonetheless!
