06.14.2012 The Fan Mile. UEFA Germany vs Netherlands

"Ich lieeebe Deutschlaaand!" They shout over and over again
The European football championships are here! This is an exciting time because when there's a game (and there's one almost every night) and Germany is playing, every single cafe on the street is showing the game on TV. There are clots of people sitting on the streets, and sometimes even passerbys just stop at a crosswalk corner to watch. It would be impossible to walk down a street without catching a glimpse of the game or the score. Even more ridiculous was that one time, my busdriver, whom was busy working his route, stopped the bus in the middle of a left turn to shout "What's the score?" out of his window at the people sitting at the street corner cafe watching the game.

Deutschland vor!
I was originally going to go to a small pub with a friend and catch the game there, something small and cosy, but I changed my mind and went to the "Fan Mile" instead. This is a giant street (Strasse des 17 juni) at Brandenburger Tor fitted with six? giant screens along the mile. Bags are checked before entering, and fans can watch and cheer together and there's plenty of beer and wurst to go around --the atmosphere is great. At the end of the mile closest to the Brandenburg gate is a stage with someone singing or hype up the crowd during the break and at the end if when we win, there's confetti! The most fun thing about the fanmile is that at the end of the game, which we won, the celebration of victory lasts two minutes until the entire place turned into a giant dance party. A pleasant surprise since I've been itching to go dancing for a while now and I don't want to go to a dance party by myself and be creepy.
