03.22.2014 Monkey's Paw Bookstore

There's a bookstore in Toronto with the most peculiar machine tucked in the back behind a red velvet curtain. This store sells old, rare, unique, and first editions of books, which are usually gorgeous, hard to find, or just plain intriguing. Like seriously, all the books in there were interesting.

The place is small, cozy, there isn't much to explain, because it is, after all a bookstore. No it doesn't have vaulted ceilings or ladders on wheels, but oh yeah, they have this book vending machine called the biblio-mat. It sort of looks like a penguin book refrigerator. You plop a toonie in the slot, and listen to the sounds of the machine clunking and shifting until you hear a little bell and a random new (old) book drops out! The experience is what really gets you, and it's very tempting to just keep feeding the machine money.

So you won't find the latest bestseller here, but you'll definitely find a new tabletop book, or some quirky relic of the past. I went home with a copy of Little Nemo, in large print.

Also, if you're interested there's a guy who read books from the machine for a year...link
